One of the first questions is “Am I a good candidate for 6 Month Smiles?”

Most people ARE. But there are some exceptions. Depending on goals and expectations, ask yourself:

Am I trying to fix a skeletal relationship (jaw bones or profile out of alignment)?
Am I wanting to fix the midlines?
Am I correcting a drastic overbite?
Do I have gum disease?

If any of these situations apply, then 6 Month Smiles is likely NOT appropriate.

Clear Braces

While some companies have done a great job branding “invisible braces” there is a disconnect from what is desired and what can be achieved. Traditional wires can do a much better job and in less time, but have historically been unattractive.

Until now.

While not completely invisible, tooth colored brackets and wires can do what clear trays cannot, and are aesthetic. Like these photos here, the difference is minor.

What is Invisalign?

This works by fabricating a series of clear aligners (or “trays”) that slowly move teeth to desired positions. The average case takes 11 months, but can take longer. Dr Timmerman is often asked about getting straight teeth by our adult patients, but they don’t want the “tin grin” look common with teenagers. Invisalign has been fantastic in solving this issue, but with some limitations. An alternative is what is commonly called 6 month braces, or short term ortho.

It doesn’t move teeth faster, it is simply limiting the goal of the orthodontics. It is similar to going to a movie and leaving after the first 30 minutes. Time didn’t go faster, you just didn’t see the whole movie. In this case we are only concerned with the “smile zone” teeth. Not everything is corrected, such as bite issues or root angles, but most adults accept their bite and just want the teeth to look pretty. The brackets and wires are tooth colored, so they are ALMOST invisible.
