Dr Timmerman is often asked about getting straight teeth by our adult patients, but they don’t want the “tin grin” look common with teenagers. Invisalign has been fantastic in solving this issue, but with some limitations. An alternative is what is commonly called 6 month braces, or short term ortho.
It doesn’t move teeth faster, it is simply limiting the goal of the orthodontics. It is similar to going to a movie and leaving after the first 30 minutes. Time didn’t go faster, you just didn’t see the whole movie. In this case we are only concerned with the “smile zone” teeth. Not everything is corrected, such as bite issues or root angles, but most adults accept their bite and just want the teeth to look pretty. The brackets and wires are tooth colored, so they are ALMOST invisible.

Virtually invisible braces
Dr Timmerman feels that there appears to be some confusion about what dental implants are and how they are used. Dental implants are normally made out of titanium and place into the bone of the upper or lower jaw. Titanium is biologically inert, so even patients with metal allergies can tolerate the implant process.
After the body has fused to the implant, final restorations can be fabricated. These can be single crowns, bridges or dentures that have implants as support.

On another board I was asked if wisdom teeth should be extracted prior to starting Invisalign. It is a good question in that it also brings up wisdom tooth retention in general.
If the wisdom teeth are not erupted and don’t appear to be coming in ever, you might consider them a “sleeping dog” and is best to just leave them alone. They could be surgically removed at a later date and not really affect the Invisalign case results.
If the wisdom teeth are partly erupted or fully erupted, I recommend removing them, even if Invisalign is not planned. Periodontally, or gum health wise, these are problems in the making and would be best to be removed.
Invisalign works by having very accurate impressions of the teeth. The presence of the wisdom teeth can inhibit taking good impressions or fabricating aligners that hold the teeth as securely as possible.
